Last week pickles, this week cakes!

Just as last week was pickled, this week is all about sweetness.

Last we took cucumbers and sliced them into coins and spears and shoved them into jars and poured in the pickling brine. Then we shredded carrots and radishes to make a pickled relish that is rumored to really spice up an otherwise ordinary grilled cheese. I bet it’d be darn tasty on a burger or sausage, too.

Speaking of divine condiments: the unexpected hit of the evening was carrot top and chive pesto. We took generous samples of it using baked zucchini coins as spoons – deeelicious. For the recipe we followed, check out Addicted to Veggies.

The Food Transformers meet again TOMORROW, July 31st from 5:30pm-8:30pm at the Dawson Community Centre (666 Woodland).

Today we got our hands on a load of strawberries and of course, more zucchini that need to be put to good use pronto. There’s talk of strawberry cream biscuits, cookies, and sweet breads. Participants get to take home a portion of whatever we make. Bring a container so you can easily carry your goods home.

$5 donation is all we ask – oh, and please let us know if you’ll be joining us: plantdetomate[at]gmail[dot]com.
